Acquiring the skills of software that are popular in the industry is an added advantage for the students to pursue higher studies or to get good job opportunities. ‘Tensegrity’ Workshop using Rhino Modelling tools powered with Grasshopper generative tools and Kangaroo simulation, was conducted at School of Architecture, MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology from 8th to 14th Feb 2016 by Einer Hler Einarsson and Shruthi Basappa from SEI Iceland.

Under the expert guidance of Einar and hand holding practicals with Shruthi, the Seven day Rhino adventure with students of 8th Sem began with sessions learning basics of Rhino Modelling, followed by introduction to advanced modeling tools and rendering techniques. Tensegrity was the theme of the workshop, hence they were made to explore the methods to create a small scale model first working in groups of 3, using simple materials like straws, elastic wires etc. The same model was then magnified in scale working it more with scale and theme.

By the third day the students were exposed to the generative modeling using Grasshopper. Working for the first time on Grasshopper environment was exciting and fun. The Students were seeing their models behave parametrically for the first time and enjoyed the experience.

Having simultaneously worked on the digital model and prototype model of the Tensegrity structure they were now ready to put the large scale model using Bamboo as the material. The teams working in groups of 10 slogged it out in the workshop of Mechanical department to create the joinery details and put together their models by the end of the 7th day.



Having completed the simulation using kangaroo, the last part of the exercise was to present their panels and all models. The enthusiastic groups of students put their best efforts in making the entire episode interesting, creative and informative.

As part of the competitions, winners for outstanding performers were: Ramya PV, Anjali Srikanth, Aprameya Pandit and Ashwini Ram.

The winning team for Large scale group model was the ICOSA team working with perfect timing and skill.

Kudos to all the participants for making it a great success . Excellent training and guidance by the trainers from Iceland made the workshop a huge success.

Also to add glass in them is another challenge. The voids within the mass edit mode behave very unfriendly to the user. It does not allow multiple sketches to be selected together to extrude as voids, nor sketches with loop in a loop allowed to extrude. Also once voided, selecting the vanished void form by continuous tabbing and not getting enough options to further edit them easily makes the procedure tedious.

Hence its easier to do the Component..Model in Place and choose Wall category to do the voids and then add the curtain system by face and cut the system in shapes of voids created using another component model in place a void using a generic model category.

If you want to get rid of  constraints that are appearing in the drawing and they refuse to go away, follow this procedure:

To turn off geometric constraints, on the command line in AutoCAD, enter  CONSTRAINTINFER and set the value to 0 (zero) or enter CONSTRAINTSETTINGS and then in the Geometric tab, uncheck the box for “Infer geometric constraints.”

To delete geometric constraints, select the objects to remove constraints from and then on the command line, enter the DELCON command.
